With this update, WhatsApp may soon be able to communicate extremely large files.

WhatsApp may let you send 2GB files

According to reports, WhatsApp is testing an update that would allow users to send and receive files up to 2GB in size.

According to regular WhatsApp code miners WABetaInfo, this increase in file size is currently being tested in Argentina in a limited beta test.

If the testing goes well, this might be a significant upgrade for Meta's messaging service. WhatsApp currently has a file transmission limit of 100MB. That was previously a large number of megabytes, but high-resolution images and movies, among other things, have caused files to grow in size in recent years.

By increasing the file size limit to 2GB, WhatsApp users will be able to transfer far larger files, such as 4K video clips or a gallery of high-resolution photographs, such as those captured by the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 108MP camera.

Larger file size limitations could also improve WhatsApp's utility as a collaboration tool, allowing users to send huge documents with images to others outside their corporate network. Because WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, it may be a secure means to share such files.

Due to the limited testing of this function, it's possible that it won't make it into the main version of WhatsApp.

"In the previous several days, WhatsApp started a modest test, and certain individuals can now exchange media files up to 2GB!" WABetaInfo reported. "Unfortunately, this is only available in Argentina, and only a limited number of beta testers can participate." In fact, because this is a test, we don't know if WhatsApp plans to roll out the same feature to more users in the future. Only time will tell if WhatsApp will reverse the modifications and restore the prior restriction after the test."

We're cautiously optimistic that the entire version of WhatsApp will get this file size upgrade. However, we expect the rollout to be delayed, presumably, so WhatsApp can monitor if the new file size limit is being misused, with users sending enormous files to their contacts solely to eat up their internet connection or to send critical information to areas where it shouldn't be communicated.
