Every day, 7 billion voice communications are sent using WhatsApp.

On Wednesday, WhatsApp announced that its massive messaging app's users spend an average of 7 billion voice messages per day. Voice notes are popular because they allow individuals to "have more expressive discussions," according to the Meta-owned messaging service. Voice notes, like their text counterparts, are safeguarded by end-to-end encryption.

"Showing emotion or excitement through voice is more natural than text," said the app's owner, whose service is used by over 2 billion people every day to send over 100 billion messages (at last count, over two years ago)

However, the growing popularity of voice messaging — a spectacular and seemingly unprecedented achievement — isn't entirely unexpected. In several emerging markets, for example, we've observed a segment of new smartphone users express a preference for voice-over typing. (WhatsApp does not provide information on how voice messages are used in different countries now.)

WhatsApp's voice notes feature is getting a slew of new features and upgrades to commemorate the occasion. These features include the ability to pause and resume a voice note recording, as well as the ability to listen to recordings at up to 2x speed.

The following is the whole changelog:

Users can now listen to a voice message outside of the chat window, allowing them to multitask and focus on other things rather than staring at a single chat window.

Recording Pause/Resume: When recording a voice message, users can now pause the recording and resume it when they're ready.

Waveform Visualization: In voice communication, WhatsApp is providing a graphic representation of the sound.

Users can now listen to their voice messages before submitting them as a draught.

If you pause while listening to a voice message, you can resume your conversation where you left off when you return to the chat.

Fast Voice Message Playback on Forwarded Messages: Listen to voice messages at 1.5x or 2x speed on both regular and forwarded messages.
